New Reads!
Hello fellow Kinders! It’s the dawn of a new month, which means that it’s time for us to
check out this month’s new read. Kind Publishing kickstarted this fabulous year with a fresh
pool of vastly talented and diversified writers, and it is looking up to be Kind’s most busy
year yet.

As all you hard-driven nerds have probably heard, one of our bests, Yuveena Lee, has been
hustling the past week signing the last pre-ordered copies of her newly published novel The
Climb Up the Banana Tree. This humorous yet heartfelt story tell-tales of the complex
relationship between a reserved Chinese mother and her daughter, and how growing up in a
traditional Asian household usually meant the lines between displays of affection and
unconditional love are often blurred.

“This is one that I hold very close to my heart,” said Lee about her latest work. “When I was
little, my favorite books were Catcher in the Rye and Little Women. I grew up reading stories
about white characters and the things they get up to. Pretty soon, everything I wrote had to
imitate that. My characters were named Christopher Powers. They had healthy parental
relationships, shopping with their mothers and playing catch in the front yards with their
fathers.”
Lee did not realize how whitewashed her chambers of creativity was, until she read The Joy
Luck Club by Amy Tan. It was then that she stumbled upon a whole different world, a raw
and culturally depictive one, where suddenly girls like her and their mothers and their
mothers before them were truly represented.

The Joy Luck Club inspired Lee to write her new novel
“That was when it hit me—I have my own stories to tell. The people I grew up with were not
named Christopher. Their names were hard to pronounce, their morals and beliefs something
to be talked about. That’s how I got my start with Kind, and I haven’t looked back since.”
So there you have it! A little prelude to one of Lee’s most personal and confessional work
yet. See you next month, my Kinders!
